I have now completed my m106 transplant in to my 6 series body. I have a 86 model 6 series so it is a e28 based car. I have for now hooked the m106 up to my automatic transmission. (4hpe22). I will source a manual transmission on a later point.
So here goes how I did is:
Removed the old engine
There are some things you have to do before installing the new engine. That is: Remove the two coolant hoses at the back end of your old engine, and install them on the turbo engine. The outlet goes the other way, than one the 7 series body, and it is a pain in the a.. to remove this when the engine is already in the compartment.
I used my old altenator and servo pump. Removed the ac pump.
Attach your old left hand side engine mount to your new engine. Hoist the engine in. I made a new right hand side engine mount from some metal I have laying around. It is quit simple to fabricated this mount if you know your way around a welder.
Mount the transmission. I used the transmission wiring loom from the 7 series. To get the old wiring loom out of the car you have to remove the senter console, speedometer and some plastic panels. Lay in the new wiring loom, hook up the kickdown switch, connect the power leads( These are nearby the steering column on the left side. On is black and goes into the large white connector, and one is black/yellow and mates with the single black/yellow cable under there. ) There is one lead that goes in to a large withe plug on the back of the speedometer. Think it did go to pin 8 in this connector. Make sure to connect the brown ground leads to the body.
Pull the ecu harness trough the firewall. I mounted the ecu on the original place. Mount the knock control box on the left side of the ecu. Connect the plugs to the control units, and mate the to white plugs that comes from the ecu harness and the transmission harness. (I hade to make a littel cut on the glowbox latch to get it to close) The black plastic panel witch covered the old ecu will now longer fit. In your glowbox you should now have to small white plugs. (3 leads in the one coming from the ecu harness) Connect the leads color to color. The really important one is the green, which goes to the coil.
Installation of intercooler: I cut a large hole behind my right headlamp. It is just wide enough to fit the intercooler here. The inlet of the cooler comes out down below the main frame in the car. I had to remove the towing eye on this side of the car. I made 3 simple brackets with I welded to the car to support the intercooler. I used the original piping to the intercooler. I just cut down the lenght of the pipes , becuse they were a tad to long.
Installation of oil cooler: I used the original piping to the oil cooler. I mounded this in front of the radiator.(In the lower end of it) I drew the pipes through a hole nearby the left headlamp.
Engine plug: The engine plug on the M106 didnt mate up with my fuse box. Cut the engine plug of the old engine, and mounted this to the m106. The leads connect color to color. Except 2 leads . The leads on pin 3 and 4 on the 6 series engine plug must switch place. This goes to the teperature gauge, and the red warning light for overheating. For some reason the 6 and 7 series use the same colors for these functions, but it is reversed.
Exhaust Welded a new front pipe. Used the original exhaust from the front muffler and backwards.
I had to sacrisfy my washer tank, I have to find a smaller tank and install it in my over crowded engine compartment.
Make sure to connect waccum hoses, fill oil and water, and enjoy your new and improved 6 series.
