Curious about a 733...
liamHmmm... can I post here about a normal E-23? Someday I want to run with the big dogs, but until then I guess I will just continue with these 733's... I just looked at an 82 733i, and I had some questions... First, it idles about 1500 to 1700 and drops after quites some time to over 1000. That seems high- what are the norms for this car? The dash was in German, and it seemed to have the smaller bumpers, but both headlights were the same size. Again, normal for a 733 sold in the states about this time? Am I looking at something brought over by a private buyer? It's got 4 reflectors built into the quarter fenders, as well. All cloth, no power, no inpection lights. - Just wondering whether it could be a euro model. Panel on the door has an American VIN WBAFE3107B7377458, with the name of the importer, no VIN medallion on the dash, but the number under the hood matches. Five speed with a gummy stick but the clutch seems good. Runs strong, just some idle and vacuum problems. (Surprise.) I think I'm going to give my wife the automatic, and I am going to get one I can play with a little more... Well, just curious about the car. I'm surprised by the difference between my 84 and the 82 model.
scottieCloth interior, german dash, euro bumpers, 5 speed. That sounds like a Euro car to me. Scottie Sharpe Sysop 84 745i 85 535i
liamYawp, turns out it's actually a 1981 Euro 728i imported in 1982. Very interesting. Title is supposed to match, but everything else gets pretty screwy from there.
LaurieHi Liam ... Just thought I'd mention ~ the Ownership Title of my 1980 Euro spec 735i 5spd. (Grey-Market ~ Brought to the States in 85) is a little screwy also! The title says "2 Door" ~ don't know how they missed the other two doors during inspection *grin* The previous owner says the original import papers listed it as a 6 Series ! I was a little concerned until someone from the board was able to verify VIN information from BMW AG production records. Just an idea. Have a Great Day ! ~ Laurie, No.CA 1980 Euro 735i 1978 US 733i
liamI finally verified everything through the dealer - the guy that owns the car sounded surprised - and I whittled him down another $200 on the price. Might buy it, now. I need it for the 733 emblem on the trunk... my 733 has a 735 emblem. It's all so wrong, somehow. Identity crisis.. Anyone think a repainted but fairly clean body, a trunk with the latch punched out of it, rotten rubber gaskets and a non-working sunroof, dirty cloth seats and no power, and no inspection board, five speed, mismarked, vacuum leaking 1981 728i with 225K miles and a strong running engine is worth $1300? That's today's dilemna. Cheers! Liam - 84 733i <insert witticism of your choice>
scottieA car in that cond. is probably not worth fixing up/painting. The five speed setup is probably worth some money. But not $1300. The rest of the car would make a nice parts car, but I don't know if you could sell or use the tranny and justify the cost in the rest of the car, especially since you can't sell the interior. Might be worth passing on.... Scottie Sharpe Sysop 84 745i 85 535i
liamSeems to be the concesus all the way around. Guess I'll keep looking for my next seven. Thanks for all the input... Cheers! Liam - 84 733i <insert witticism of your choice>
AdamLiam, I have your car. Funny how the trunk emblems get switched, like driving a 728i E23 Euro is such a shameful thing. Sure we'd all like to install the 4500cc turbo motor, but would I change the emblem on the trunk ???? : ) NOT !!! Not unless it was required by law, and then still maybe not. You were talking about the running characteristics of the engine, i.e. high idle, major idle adjustments etc. Well since I've been through the Jens School of m30 Vacuum and Intake Systems, and the way my 2800cc w/DME runs now?, I think I can help you restore the motor to top running condition. With the Euro cam you should have as good a running engine as I do, they're the same basic motor configuration. I'm amazed at how much more horsepower and acceleration I have. Runs smooth and nasty. Put's a grin on my face when I hit 3,000 in any gear now. Get that dumb 733 emblem off there first and we'll talk.: ) ATB, ADL.
Afshin-SwitzerlandHi guys, Once I had it even better than your's. I had a 1978 "728" no I haven't forgot to type that "i" !!! I still can remember that, such an uncomplicated and nice car it was.... Never been in trouble with, well had nothing to cause any trouble! No fuel injection, no electronics at all, no power anything (exept power mirors and central locking), analog clock with manual climate controls (roundel form, with clock in the middle), even not an air cond. or tinted glasses they were withe like a glass of water ..... !!! I've sold it to a good friend of mine, some 4 or 5 years ago. He did a real big power improuvement job on that car and eliminated the only weakness of that car, took some 300+ HP out of that engine !!! You know, full head job, 3.3 displacement, 3 double Webers, ...etc. I still can hear the SOUND of that engine .... woaw ... !!! OK, sorry for the long post, but I tought that could be of intrest for you 728"i" guys ..... !!! Regards, Afshin. 1982 745i (the one I never leave) Had before; 1986 735i 1978 728

Now that sounds like fun. I would love to have manual climate control. And I miss having a car with multiple webers. (Had two sidedrafts on my '02). Scottie Sharpe Sysop 84 745i 85 535i

Yep the Weber combo's are fun, since I got into the fuel injection thing there seems to be something missing. I don't have to adjust mixtures, synch flow rates, and where's all the power and top end a good 2800cc powerplant could produce with carburetors ?. Adam. PS Not that I'm complaining, I'm still good performance for a daily driver. [/quote]
