| 5 - speed swap for Motronic 745i |
| Kristjan | Tomorrow I`m going to take out whole engine and swap my tranny from auto to manual.
I will try to take some pictures for you guys
Wish me luck ;-)
I have all the parts and I really hope that everything goes fine.
Although I haven`t decided what tranny I will use.
I have one ///M5 and one 3.5 5 speed tranny.

| Afshin-Switzerland | will be awaiting to check your pics and posts, I'm also heading to do the same as soon as I get everything together... Still haven't got a tranny, I've heard that ///M5 (E34) tranny wouldn't fit ?!
Have you got a (rare) E28 ///M5 tranny ?

yes, I have E28 ///M5 tranny :)
My friend has E28 M535 with Alpina B7 engine.
He swapped his tranny to Alpina and old one is mine.
BTW! It only costs about 60$ :)

| M545i | Think E34 '90 M5 tranny fit M30 engines and are strong!!!!!
Getrag 280 I guess.
|
| Afshin-Switzerland | The ///M535i got a normal M30 engine. The mods are only a ground effect kit. So, its tranny is not different from the normal 735i or 635csi. I thought that you're talking about the very rare E28 ///M5, which got the S100? engine (not sure about the name) 4 valve twin-cam engine, which also fited the ///M635csi and the later model called just ///M6. The tranny out of these cars is strong and a staight bolt on on our E23 745i's. As about E34 ///M5 tranny, I've been told that it doesn't fit. No need to say that I was pretty surprized, cause I allways thought they're the same as the older ///M cars, Maybe diff. mounts ? Maybe diff. length ? Any idea ?
Regards, Afshin.

| Kristjan | I think that it`s ///M tranny.
It has 1st gear down.
Normal M30 tranny is 1st gear up.
Any ideas?
BMW 745 `85 full stock |
| Afshin-Switzerland | OK, that's the Getrag sport tranny (and not a ///M one) that you're talking about. It's got no overdrive (a real 5-speed) on these trannys, the 5th gear ratio is the same as on the 4th on the normal 5-speed tranny. that used to be an option, avalable on every E23, E24, and E28.
I doubt that it be internally any "stronger" than the normal 5-speed one. However it would be a definately better choice on our turbo engined cars, because of its closed gear ratios from 1st to the 5th (turbo will keep on spooling).

| TCD | Afshin,
You need to find a Getrag 265 two piece tranny to use in your 745i. The driveshaft you are buying from me will only work with this tranny. The 265 is plenty strong for your car. The 265CR is actually weaker and prone to failure. They are also very expensive to buy and rebuild. Find a tranny from a 1983/84 533/633/733. These had the 265 and also a lighter flywheel. It is 16.5lbs instead of 23lbs!
Todd
|
| Afshin-Switzerland | Many thanks Todd, what the heck is the "CR" in 265CR standing for ? In what is 265CR different from "normal" 265 ? On which series was it to find ?(to avoid it, forsure!)
Does the 265 also take 15+ PSI of boost ?
Regards, Afshin.
1982 745i
|
| TCD | The CR is the close ratio. Also known as the "dog leg". First gear is lower left. You want the Over Drive 265 with a .81 fith gear. This will be perfect for with your 3.07 diff. I will be running the same setup in my M535i. 745i engine, 265OD tranny, 3.07LSD and hopefully 15psi!
Todd
|
| Afshin-Switzerland | Gotcha, thanks Todd !
Afshin.
|
| M545i | Here's my opinion on 265CR. I own a M535i (euro)which has the 265CR gearbox and the 3.07LSD. For the 218hp non-turbo this is ok for the road but if you put the 745i engine (+10PSI) in an E28 with a 3.07LSD the 265CR gearbox will be too short and you will have hardly spooled up the turbo and you need to shift again. Remember that the 265CR does not shift as fast as a tiptronic. So you will loose all effort in changing gears all the time. The 265 or even 260 is ok and gives the turbo time enough to built the power and keep it through the gears.
In two weeks I will test the 260 gearbox(normal 5 speed) with the 3.07LSD and my 745i engine (10psi) on the track. I have another 265CR lying around that I might try sometime. I will report my findings.

| Afshin-Switzerland | Great, I'll be waiting for your posts. You already ARE where I'd like to be ... !!!
Regards, Afshin.
1982 745i
PS, The final rear end ratio of 265CR in combo with 3.07 LSD should be the same as I got it right now, with my 3HP22 (third gear ratio is 0.81) it's actually not that bad ....
|
| Afshin-Switzerland | Oh sorry I ment 1 : 1 as the last gear's ratio on 3HP22 and not 0.81, which is for 4HP22 ...
Afshin.
|
| M545i | Afshin, you got a L-jetronic 745i right? Do you run stock boost, if not what system do you use to increase boost?

| Afshin-Switzerland | Yep, mine is a L-Jet one. I'm "still" running stock boost but waiting to get my upgrade kit from 745i.com guys. I'm expecting to run 15+ boost levels and something around 350+ HP / 500+ Nm ..... God it's gonna be fun !!!
Regards, Afshin.

PS, The 3HP22 sucks.... with this tranny, my car is allways running in two modes : OFF (-3000 RPM) or ON (+3000) !!!
|

| Bob745_Dallas | Cliff,
That grey wire is the crank position sensor used by the diagnostic connector. The 745 has 3 different sensors for crank position and they feed 3 different components; i.e.; the Motronic gets its signal from the one in the bellhousing, the knock control computer gets the signal from the one on #1 plug wire, and the diagnostic connector has the one on the front crank pulley.

I have a 5-speed converted 745i (Motronic), I'm not getting the boost I did with the auto. If you have a chance to check that Bentley's manual for the wire to jump, it would be great.

So far have not installed any type of blow off valve etc. Just using the stock boost controls without problems (other thatn you have to shift really fast to keep from losing boost between gears).

| Kristjan | So....bad news.
I reinstalled the engine and encountered some problems.
633 tranny fits to the engine but joist(I hope it is the right word)of the tranny is way too short. It need to be about 10cm longer to attach to the frame.
Second problem was that drive shaft wich was claimed to be 535, don`t fit. Too long!
It would be OK if I could put togheter old drive shaft rear and new ones front.
But they don`t fit togheter.
Seems that front half of the "new" drive shaft is OK - center bearing attachments fit correctly.
Solving the mystery!
Kristjan
Afshin, how are you doing?
BMW 745 `85 almost stock :) |
| M545i | Kristjan, what do you mean with joist, is that the tranny support to fix the tranny to the chassis? If you mean the support then you can buy it new for a very reasonable price, I bought one new for my dogleg sportgearbox and paid only $18.
Hope this helps you somehow,
|

| Afshin-Switzerland | Kristjan,
I'm heading way up to Germany tommorow morning. Once there, with a fellow member of our german E23 club, we'll start that swap (he got the tranny). No need to say how scared and nervous I am. I hate to discover, right in the middle of the operation, hey we still need this or hey we've forgot that ....
But one thing's allready scaring me, he (my friend in Germany) wrote me that we need to also reset something in L-Jet box (brain) cause the injection sequences are not the same for auto and 5-speed ... ?!!
Does anyone here had heard any thing about this specific problem ?
I've allways thought that specially with L-Jet models the 5-speed swap is a straight bolt on ?!!
Mischa,
Did you have to reset any thing on the L-Jet brain, or it just workes fine on your 5-speed tranny ?
|
| Afshin-Switzerland | OK, I wrote to him again and he insistes on things like I have to expect bad (rough) idle and engine's stalling by reving (from idle)...
What du you guys think about these issues ? If any setting needed, how do I have to proceed ?
TIA, Afshin.
|
| Kristjan | I´m not sure but why should you have some problems???
Almost same wlywheel with same amount of tooth!
Are all sensor(crank, flywheel) same?
What M545 thinks?
BTW I found that support.
Kristjan
BMW 745 `85 almost stock :) |
| Afshin-Switzerland | Well the guy says that the amount of calculated injection is different to keep an engine on regular idle with automatic or manual 5-speed, and when you push on gaz pedal to take off after shifted into first gear, it should stall .... ???!!!
Any thoughts ?
TIA, Afshin.
PS, Guys, I'm talking about L-Jetronic system ....
|
| M545i | Hi guys I am back, here we go:
I didn't change anything to any of the electronic items I have on my L-jet. The engine runs a little rougher at idle than before but this is because my blowoff valve stays open at idle (too strong vacuum).
But when I hit the gaspedal the car accelerates normally and strong. I don't think you can reset or change anything in the ECU to make it a 5 speed runner, the ECU doesn't take any signal from the auto tranny.
If there would be some kind of modification needed I would like to know too!!!
Thanks,
Mischa

| Bob745_Dallas | Kristjan,
The front crank sensor only feeds the diagnostic connector so you can forget about it as a problem source.
Have you checked your main relay. Also have you confirmed that 12V is getting to the main relay on the green wire with the key in the run position? This green wire feeds from the green/red wire at the OBC relay under the dash. That's one of the black boxes hanging down in your photo above (the one with the two green flat 4-pin connectors.
The reference sensor on the bell housing could be the culprit. Swap the reference and speed sensors and see what happens. Also check to make sure that nothing has gone wrong with the pick-up (wedge) welded to the back of the flywheel for the reference sensor.
|
| Kristjan | Back again!
Ignition coil is fine!
I also measured some wires.
Can somebody check them on their car?
At the ignition coil - both wires +12V (continuously)
At the fuel injection nozzle - both wires +12V (continuously)
BTW! Fuelpump and windows does not work!
Kristjan@searching the problem!
Where is main relay???
Edited by - Kristjan on Aug 14 2002 00:30:31 |
| Bob745_Dallas | Main relay is in the engine bay on the firewall passenger side. The one with the silver cap in your picture. Did you try forcing the fuel pump by manually engaging the fuel pump relay? You can take the top off of the relay and force it closed or do what John Stein did and drill a tiny hole in the cap to allow closing with a tooth pick or similar.
Your voltages sound right to the coil and injectors. The Motronic provides the ground signal to fire these. All of your symptoms sound like main relay not functioning. When it's out you won't get fuel or fire. The fuel pump relay gets its start signal from the main relay. Incidently, one of the green 4-pin connectors on your OBC relay looks like it may not be fully inserted in the picture.
Your window problem is probably the circuit breaker on the dash panel. Have you plugged it back in and switched it on?
|
| Kristjan | Thank you Bob!
You`ve been very helpful!
I check main relay as soon as I can.
Kristjan
BMW 745 `85 almost stock :) |
| Kristjan | Could Motronic cause such a problem?
BMW 745 `85 almost stock :) |
| Bob745_Dallas | Yes the Motronic could cause the problems indicated, but it's never the first place to look. Trouble is, when you've had all of the wiring disconected that is apparent in your photo's it would be very easy to miss hooking up all of your grounds. This could be catastrpohic to the Motronic unit. More than one unit has blown a ground foil internally due to faulty grounds in the engine bay. Most of the time when this happens the injectors stay wide open and flood the engine with gasoline. Dangerous situation to say the least. If you find that your unit has been harmed I can tell you where to send it for repair at a very reasonable price. The same source has extra units available and can provide/install the original Tuoma chip at the same time. Just email me if interested.
Meanwhile...I'm betting that the Motronic is not the problem.
|
| Kristjan | OK!
At the main relay there is one wire broken. It`s red and is togheter with thicker red wire.
What is that black box, which is located next to main relay.
Those wires are broken too! ( previous owner was %@£$£€ )
I connected all the groud wires correctly.
Kristjan
BMW 745 `85 almost stock :) |
| Joe745i | Kristjan,
Just ran out and looked hoping it might help you a little. But on my car, there is a small red/white wire and large red/white wire that feed into relay together. Then, towards the firewall, there is one single thick red wire.
Also, I am not sure what that box is, and I have a "well sealed" rubber boot around the plug and see no other wires going into it.
Joe

| Kristjan | Thanks Joe!
I will post if I find something!
We have another 745 in Estonia(2 pcs alltogheter) and I will try his Motronic.
Kristjan
BMW 745 `85 almost stock :) |
| Bob745_Dallas | The red wire is your 12 volt feed from the battery to the main relay. The car WILL NOT START without this 12 volts.
The black box next to it is your barometric pressure sensor for high altitude operation.

That thing which is top of the turbo and attached with two allen screws there is oil line connected to it - it`s broke and I had car running about 10 sek and oil came out of there! Very big leak.

| Kristjan | Hi!
It`s been a while since I wrote here!
I`ve been sick(winter is coming) and had no time to work with car.
Yesterday I got car running but unfortunately it ran about 5 min.
Engine has no idle. I had to hold down gas pedal for idle - I hope that idlevalve wires are in loose!
Also there seems to be problem with driveshaft - the car shakes like freezing elephant!
Clinking noise from engine - Have to track it down though!
And the exhaust sound, I certainly need one OEM back muffler!
It sounded like jet airplane taking off - approx. 120dB!
That`s pretty much all!

| Afshin-Switzerland | Hey Kristjan,
Yesss it's been a looong time ... I was just thinking about to write a post asking if what happened to you boddy, funny that I saw you've already wrote !!! I hope you're fine now.
As you've probably already know, I only could have fun for about 50 Km with my newly fitted 5-speed ... read other postes to find out why ...
As about your driveshaft's vibrations, did you watched to match the marks on both ends, when fitted them together ? If not, that's forsure why you got such a vibrations now. About no idle, it's funny because I had the oposit problem (idle too high) right after the swap. I guess that was because of the lack of torque converter and my 5-speed flywheel being lighter than it. I also had some minor, really very few, hesitations at about 2500 rpm on 5th overdrive gear, crusing speeds. Once agian I culpite the lack of torque converter and need of a different L-Jetronic tuneup ....
Regards, Afshin.

| Kristjan | Thanks Afshin!
I did forgot the marks - oh silly me!
I`m bit more worried about that clinking noise coming from engine!
Have to check it out!
It`s very very difficult build cars like E23 in Estonia. Almost impposible to find parts and things! When we add here my financial possibilities then we have one helluva dream come true!
I was so happy when I drived my car yesterday although there is lot`s of problems!
But I know that with your(all board members) help I can make it even better!

| Kristjan | Well!
The engine running but the noise is still there!
Strangest thing is that suddenly there is noise and the other moment it is gone!
I have to study a little bit more. It seems to coming from 5-th cylinder, I thought that there is one bad rocker arm but then one cylinder would not work.
Engine idles almost perfectly (all cylinders working)!
I have one idea, there is little screw in the rocker arm, where you can adjust valve. Maybe it is stripped and valve clearance is way to big and eccentric adjuster is loose!
Any help would be helpful!

| M545i | Kristjan with one eccentric loose you would almost certainly not have a nice idle. But check it anyway and also the bolts from the oil spray bar above the camshaft. Maybe it is a valve that from time to time stays closed.
Is all of your electrics OK? Could you detail wire colours that you had to swap?
Thanks a lot and good luck,
Mischa

| Kristjan | Yesterday I checked the engine, luckily it`s allright and working just fine! Clinking noise is coming from tranny.
uhhhhhh that was close one!

| ra0507 | Does anyone know whether a Getrag 280 trans from an e28 M5 is suitable for the 745i? I have seen various versions of the 260 and 265 indicated as being the most appropriate for the 745.

| M545i | Yes, that one fits. You could even use the tranny out of the E34 M5 3.6 which is also a 280. They are stronger than the tranny's out a M535i.

| ra0507 | Misha,
Thanks. A couple of other questions: Will I need to shorten the driveshaft? Where does one get the pedal assembly? If new, does anyone have the parts list?
Rick

| cellguru | Your best bet is to find a parts car and get it all. The pedal support bracket on the E23 built after 9/84 is the same for manual and auto, but you also have the hydrualics and etc to contend with.
You also need some pieces for the console for the manual conversion.
I suspect you will need a different drive shaft.

So many 745's . . . . so little time |
| Noval | Seems like Im the luckyone, cause I baught my 745iA with 5-speed manual already. It works perfectly, but the pedal is a bit too hard to press.
Last week, standing in traffic jam, I think I had to press the pedal 10 000 times. And now its not coming back as it should, if you know what I mean. It stays down there. But think that its not a big probl.

| scottie | If your pedal does not return, you could have a bad slave cylinder. However, check your pedal box assy first to see if it is cracked near the pedal hinge.

| Grundelwolf | I have done this conversion ...i used a 535 trans in a 84 745il..used 635 pedals with a custom drive shaft, but a stock one will work but because of the extra 3' in the rear of the body a standard 745i shaft does not work ...also the models of trans are important when this is done ..if the 280 is used the trans is aproxx 2 1/4 inches longer than the 265 but this can also be fixed by a riser shim and peg for the trans. The shifter assembly should come from a 633 because of the four door seating arangement placing in a closer arrangement to the firewall .. and with any luck you wont wear thr wheels off of your creeper with the amount of rolling in and out of the under car (thats how i did it ) it took me 11 days to get mine from start to end ..

the clutch and pedals
even with a normal cluth this sachs assembly is still eaisly pushed with a manual assembly .. but the slave and master are not very far apart, in real relation.. and the slave uses next to no capacity for the volume ..anyway.. it took me almost 4 hours to bleed mine
the best way is to go and get a draw through bleeder and find the bleeder valve and then draw it through manually... if this isnt avaliable then you and a friend are going to be there for a bit but be very sure to check all the connections and hoses for seepage (that is why is will fade awy like that) and 10000 ..well kep goin almost there, but it will come back.. good luck.
