which 'chip' to use
cliffois it possible to get some more info on the types of replacement chips you guys in the states are able to get hold of. the name steve c is mentioned on some of the posts. any info on him and his chips? my tuning guys (avoturbo.com) have suggested a 'link intercept' tuning device that fits between afm and motronic that can take over all aspects of fuel/ignition, allowing higher boost/more fun. the overboost device would have to be fooled, as this can still interfere.
Jon 86 745 MSI am not going to toot our own horn (shameless plug) but check out our site www.745i.com The device you are talking about is a good tuning device but will not change the Fuel mapping or, timing or the boost correction problem. cliffocan your chip be fitted by a technician here in melbourne, or is it recommended to send it to your team at745i.com.
Jon 86 745 MSA good tech who can solder should have no problem. The soldering is to provide a socket to install the chip. If you have one of the newer Motronics with the 32 or 64 bit chip then the mod is not nececssary. You can send it to us but that would cause quite a delay. If you can do it I would just buy the upgrade and install it yourself. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
clawson3Get the chip from the 745iTeam. It is awesome. No problems, great power increase. You won't be disappointed. Had mine for week now.
cliffojon, i pulled the motronic out of the car and have got all the details. on the cover of the unit is the code 0 261 200 013. inside, its a single eprom S720 chip with its own socket. the code(on a sticker on top of chip) on the eprom is126755146( the 46 is in smaller script than the preceding nos.).on the actual chip there are two lines ofnumbers.first line LD2764A45 . second line U5083206S .the pcb version no on the side of the circuit board is SR FD12.85 .the pcb codes written on the circuit board are as follows- 1 268 329 067 2V .also- 1 268 311 067 .hopefully thats all you need to identify the correct chip. thankyou jon, looking forward to your reply.
Jon 86 745 MSCliff, you have the single chip 64 bit version of the Motronic for your 745. It appears that it was made in December of 85. Please post your last 7 digits of your VIN and I can confirm the cars exact date of MFG. This Motronic requires NO MODIFICATION as it is ready to accept the upgraded chip. With just the chip and FMU you can run up to 10 psi of boost by just pulling the wastegate hose. But as Victor can tell you it is best to go the whole distance if you can. The wastegate mod and boost controller will really make your car come alive. Not pushing all of the mods as the amount of gain from just the chip and the FMU are nothing to sneeze at. cliffojon, im smiling now! as i went to open the box i was in a bit of a sweat not knowing what to expect. i cant supply you with a vin number as the donor car was dismantled at the bmw repairers workshop. he said it was an '86 model, which was probably the year of first registration, so the pcb numbers of '85 would make sense. ok, now for the fun part. where and how do i get hold of the chip. a mate of mine is going to the states on business, which would avoid having to post it.any suggestions? would posting do any damage to the chip- ie-x-rays etc.
Jon 86 745 MSShould not hurt it. Where in the states is your friend coming to? We can do PayPal or you can send us a Money order through the mail. Let me know how you want to do it. I will help you any way I can. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffothanks jon. i'll ask roger when/how/where etc.etc and get back to you. i've also got a mate with an import export business. we could do it through an agent of his in the states. what do you think?
Jon 86 745 MSIf you want just the chip it would not be a problem just to mail it. If you decide to mail the wastegate for upgrading it might me better to use an agent for tracking and insurance reasons. Anew wastegate is about $500.00 US and would be a shock if lost. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffohey jon. the wastegate i'll leave as is. i want to get an incabin electronic boost controller that can be adjusted 'on the fly'. that way it can be turned low for duties as a family car, and way up for dad! the guys at avoturbo.com have got a very good unit for this job called an E.B.C (for obvious reasons). do you find it a hassle to manually adjust your wastegate or do you leave it alone once set?
Jon 86 745 MSI like the ability to control the boost. But to do so you must modifiy the wastegate. In most instances I leave it open as I travel back and forth to work VIA interstate. Sometimes in town I turn it down or turn it off to keep me out of trouble. Team 745 boost controller sells for $185.00 and is usally much cheaper than a EBC unit. cliffohey john, hows it going. my mate will be in the states mid june(hopefully)to conduct some business. he will be in los angeles at some time, staying at the sheraton(i think, yet to be confirmed).can you tell me when/where/how of getting a chip ordered, paid for-ie credit card/bank transfer, and sent to his hotel? do you have any suggestions? looking forward to your reply. clifton doehmann.
Jon 86 745 MSCliffo, Not a problem. The chip is $225.00 plus $21.00 for FedEx overnight shipping. I will need the address of the Hotel for shipping. If you can I prefer PayPal. It is easier to do business that way. Once you get the chip if you need any hekp on putting it in let me know. I can Email you any instructions you may need. cliffothankyou jon.i will email you soon with details. clifton doehmann
cliffojon, it's on the way!
cliffojon, the chip arrived today, and i cracked the windows of my house with a delighted yell!!!!!!!!. so, on the weekend i will plug and play and let you all know what/ how it all went. many, many thanks jon. clifton
cliffowill fit the chip tonight(7-12-2002) and take the old girl for a test drive afterwards. let you know how it went later tonight, our time. see ya!
Jon 86 745 MSI bet you come back with a smile on your face. Nothing like a little extra boost. Remember to pull the hose on the wastegate!! Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffoa smile? i damn near split my head in half. what a rush. i've got to buy you a beer, somehow, somewhere i have GOT to buy you a beer! we took the motronic out, strapped ourselves to it and changed the chip. put the unit back in the car, and cranked her over. and cranked. and cranked and stopped, thinking this is not right. went to check all the connectors, and the knock control plug was not inserted properly. fixed that, started her up and went for a little drive to make sure it was running ok. pulled over, pulled the wastegate hose, and drove some more. this is when the smiling started. have i mentioned buying you a beer?.how does an indicated 13 pounds of boost sound?. what a rush!even at part throttle, 3000 rpm in economy mode she was pulling 140 kph, and my mate was saying "wow this is incredible" and i said wait till i switch to sport mode. the back went down, the nose went up and 200kph later, i backed of thinking thats enough, i dont want to lose my license. it runs so well jon, thankyou to you and all those that helped develop the chip. next, the wastegate, and that beer i talked about.
KristjanNice one. BMW 745 `85 almost stock :)
Jon 86 745 MSCome on Cliff. Only a 124 mph? The car will now do much better than that. Be Careful!! Don't want to start knowing all the local law on a first name basis. If you are pulling 13 psi of boost you are running lean you need to do an FMU to keep from killing your engine. Stock regulator is only good for about 8 or 9 psi. Now do I have to come there or are you going to come here to buy that beer. Maybe one day we can meet half way. Glad you like it! Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffoone day jon, one day. can you tell me the pressure in bar that the regulator should hold the fuel at when under higher boost. its saturday morning and im still grinning!
Jon 86 745 MSAt 13 psi that is about .9 bar boost. At that psi you should be at about 5.1 bar or 75 psi of fuel pressure. At 16 psi or 1.1 bar boost you should be at about 85 or 90 psi fuel pressure (5.8 or 5.9 bar). This will insure that you are not running lean and detonate. Stock fuel pressure regulator will only give you 2.5 bar or about 37 to 39 psi of fuel pressure. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffoi hear what you're saying jon. it would be a pity after all this to hole a piston or do a head gasket, so, i wont drive it till i fit an fmu. i'll go to the boys at avoturbo here in melbourne to get one fitted, and they can then dyno the old girl to make sure its running sweetly. on last nights run, there was no hint of detonation or that the knock control unit was pegging back the ignition. there was just torque, a whole mountain of torque! we pulled onto a freeway last night from a side road, and i was going about 70 kph, and the bloke behind was getting impatient, so as is the case the world over, the moment he saw some space he came around from behind to get past. i owe a great deal of credit to cellguru for what happened next. i put the foot down, and he was left standing. backed off at 200 kph and he was nowhere to be seen, just two tiny dots off light in the distance. dont know if it was a corvette or not , kevin, but i really couldnt hang around to find out, as i was hanging on to the steering wheel to avoid being pushed into the back seat. here's to more boost! see you guys later.
JensWhy dont you get Car tech one its a wounderful Unit? Sincerely Jens
Jon 86 745 MSCliff, DO use the cartech unit. The fuel mapping in the chip was designed to be used with this FMU. There should be someone there that sells this unit. If you cannot find out who it is I will call Corkey Bell and ask him who his distrbuter is over there. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffothankyou for your tip, jens and jon. would the information as to an australian distributor be on corky's website?. i also understand the need to use the same gear that you guys are using. why reinvent the wheel?. Edited by - cliffo on Jul 14 2002 02:01:57
Jon 86 745 MSI don't know if it is there are not. My computer lost explorer so now I do not have the proper scripting to see some things. Go there and look. If it is not there let me know and I will call. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffothanks jon. i e-mailed their website to ask if they have an aussie distributor, and if not, will get back to you and get one.
cliffojon both BEGI and Cartech have no representative here in australia, so i again need your help. can you tell me the price to purchase/ship an fmu to me. thanks mate!.
cliffoi also spoke to terry from avo, to see if they had something similar here in Oz. he said no, they only had a "malpassi" rising rate fuel regulator with a pressure ratio of 1-1, whereas the cartech unit has,(according to terry), a pressure ratio of 3-1, which obviously equates to a higher pressure across the injector. let me know jon, how much to ship. thanks
Jon 86 745 MSThe Cartech FMU is $269.00 and the mounting bracket is 18.98. Cliff after shipping the last Item I would thing it would not be more than $20.00. You will also have to replace your fuel hose to a higher pressure type. Stock hose is only good to about 50 psi. We are running pressures as high as 100 psi. We sell 10' of hose (enough to do the stuff under the hood) for $22.50. The hose clamps are 6 for $8.00. If you get all of the stuff Cliff it might run the shipping cost up a little but I would think not more than $5.00 more. I can weigh it all together and get a more accurate shipping if you decide to get it all. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffojon, i'll get the FMU and the bracket. the rest i can get here as i have already replaced the fuel hose to the motor with a fuel only/high pressure rated hose. it will be interesting to see the improvement in 0-100kph times with the fmu fitted. i took the car out this morning for a run, fitted the G-TECH meter, and recorded a 5.85 run, followed by loading up the auto before launch, for a second run of 5.45sec. the chip has certainly woken the old girl up!!!
Jon 86 745 MSI do not know if the FMU will increase your times but I do know that it will keep your Engine from destroying itself. What is the 5.45 seconds? 1/4 mile time or something else? Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffono jon, not 1/4 mile. i would have to bolt on a solid fuel rocket for those times!. what i quoted was for 0-100 kph, or 0-62 mph times, measured with a device called a G-TECH meter, which measures acceleration times, horsepower figures,g-force amounts etc. the unit uses a precision accelerometer to measure acceleration. its made by tesla electronics, www.gtechpro.com/ , in the states. apart from dyno figures, this allows me to measure the differences on the road. a great piece of gear.
Afshin-SwitzerlandOur 745i turbo cars aren't at their best for 0-100 Km/h race (damn turbo lag / auto tranny ...!). Even not optimal on 400 m drag race, but definately better on 1000 m one. I think it's useless to compare them that way, unless you got a 5-speed ... Just my 02.
cliffoi'm not trying to compare them with other cars afshin. because we are restricted here in australia to a top speed limit of 100kph, i deliberately chose to fit a rear end that would give me the greatest rate of acceleration, not top speed. this meter allows me to see the improvements i make on my car, and not to put down other peoples cars. i am so happy with the chip fitted, that i want you all to know what makes me happy, in this instance the massive improvement to MY car. wait till you fit all your gear, i think we will hear you smiling and telling us all about it. look forward to hearing about it!
Jon 86 745 MSNow you know why I call my car the rocket!! Remeber the post I made about rocket fuel? :):):) LOL I ment 0 to 60 or 0 to 100k It's rally late here I am about to crash for the night. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
Jon 86 745 MS100 k top speed!! That sucks really bad! Hell I cannot drive slower than 85 to work in the morning in fear of getting run over. What rear Diff are you running? Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffowhen i asked all the questions about the chip and the results of fitting it, i could only guess at the end result. now that its fitted, the improvements are massive, and i'm absolutely thrilled with the results, and want to share them with you all. i might have to call mine "the rocket down under". hope you dont mind jon.
clifforear end is a 3.91 limited slip diff, from an english alpina car. the speed limits here jon, are so strictly enforced by the police who ,it seems, are hiding behind every bush, hoping for some hapless person to stray a few kilometres over the limit. the latest idea to stop the road death toll, is that the police have discretionary powers to penalize a person who is driving at 1-3 kph over the limit. never mind that most car manufacturers figure in about a 10%+ or - accuracy in their speedometers. the ordinary person here, thinks its all to do with revenue raising and filling the state governments coffers( 350million AUD$) last year.
Jon 86 745 MSWht about the speed limits in the middle of the country where it is no mans land? Same goes out there? If so then It would take forever to get from one place to another if you drive. I would like to test a 3.91 diff on my car. I was dissipointed in the responce in my car with the 3.25 diff I put in. It was some improvement but not what I was looking for. Jon Jacobs 86 745i (Die Rakete) 16 psi+ Boost with Team WWW.745i.com Performance Parts
cliffospeed limits are unrestricted in the large open spaces of the Northern Territory of australia. to get there would be a 2-3 day drive from here in melbourne. a lot of car manufacturers from around the world go there to do testing in extreme conditions,ie- heat, heat and more heat. i've said earlier that the original diff in my car was a 3.45 ratio. when we went for the first drive after fitting the 745i combo, i thought i had wasted my money as the car underperformed according to my expectations. alan from peninsula bmw suggested a change of diff, and we went to a 4.11. awesome acceleration, it blew away a lot of contenders at the traffic light races. the bearings went on it, so we went to a 3.91 ratio, from an english alpina 635. that and THE CHIP is what makes the car such a delight to drive. was'nt cellguru talking about fitting a 3.91 to one of his cars?
cellguruDid it about a month ago, and I think it may be too low! It does wake up the acceleration some, and causes lots of smiles driving around town. The car now chirps the tires under full throttle acceleration going into 2nd and 3rd gears. The transmission seems to shift somewhat harder than before, not sure if that will end up causing a problem or not. Problem is I am in overdrive at about 40mph, and at 85 on the freeway the engine is turning about 3K RPM. While it is defenitely illegal, out west here in some of the wide open spaces we have occasion to get to triple digits safely, so I think perhaps a 3.73 or 3.64 would be a better choice for me, but finding one that fits without mods has proven elusive.

Kevin Heiner So many 745's . . . . so little time
cliffohey kevin. mine used to chirp, even before the chip went in. the car is now wearing 265/17 on the rear, ultra sticky dunlop road/race rubber, and she aint making any noise any more. i've been comparing notes with jon about speed limits. are they all the same in the states, or do different areas have different limits. we have a blanket speed limit here of 100kph(62mph), and if you go over, the penalties can be hefty.
ra0507Cellguru, You also may want to switch to Redline transmission fluid and use their differential fluid as well. I think it will prolong the life of the tranny and rear end. Rick
cellguruThanx, already did the diff, doing the trans a quart at a time ! Kevin Heiner So many 745's . . . . so little time
